Disaster Prevention Measures for Home and Family
Due to abnormal weather conditions in recent years, severe rain fall, typhoons and earthquake-related natural disasters occur more frequently, resulting in enormous damage and harm. By making yourself familiar with daily prevention measures, you can prepare sufficiently for the worst-case scenario. Furthermore, make sure to engage in local disaster prevention activities. By dedicating effort to preparations beforehand, you can reduce the damage to a minimum.

The “Disaster Prevention and Risk Management E-College” by The Fire and Disaster Management Agency helps to raise awareness of disaster prevention and risk management in case of emergency. It can be accessed anytime and offers a variety of contents, provided by residents as well as fire department members.

Daily Preparations for Disasters
- Check the weather forecast.
- Take care of elderly people and other vulnerable groups.
- Find shelter immediately when you feel endangered.
- Prepare mobile radios and flashlights in case of power outage.
- Reserve food and water rations for around 3 days.
- Double-check your evacuation site and routes.
- Confirm means of contact and responsibilities in case of emergency within your family.
- Check and inspect safety in and around your house (for example the building itself, concrete walls and reinforcements).
- Confirm the location of your fire extinguisher and make sure you know how to use it.
- Prepare emergency goods according to the checklist below.
- Confirm methods of using emergency medicine and first-aid treatments.

Other information
- If there is a possible disaster related to typhoons or other calamities, Kobayashi City will take disaster prevention measures successively, according to the Local Disaster Prevention Plan.
- Please inquire the emergency points of contact, if you don’t know your evacuation site.
- The Disaster Response Head Office is located at the Kobayashi City Hall Main Building, 3rd floor.
- In case your house got damaged by a natural disaster like heavy rain, typhoons or earthquakes, the Risk Management Department issues “Calamity Affliction Verifications” (risai shoumei), which are required for Residence Tax Exemption or insurance claims. (\300 fee)
- For the procedure, you will need a picture displaying the damage and either an official name seal (inkan) or a personal name seal. For more details, please contact the Risk Management Department (Tel. 0984-23-1175).
