Marriage Registration (When you are getting married)

The marriage will become effective on the day the notification is submitted.

Address of husband or wife, temporary or permanent residence

The husband or wife to be

• Marriage Registration (A document bearing the signatures of the two adults witnessing their marriage. In case of a minor the consent of the parents is required)
• Official copy of the family register (Only needed if your permanent residence is not Kobayashi City)
• Seal of the person submitting the notification

A marriage must be registered by submitting a Marriage Notification at Kobayashi City Hall regardless of the nationality of the persons involved. If the requirements are met by both parties and the notification is accepted the marriage can take place. Foreign nationals must submit a certificate of legal capacity to contract marriage which can be obtained at the embassy (general consulate) of the native country of the foreign national wishing to marry. If you submit documents written in a foreign language a Japanese translation must be attached.

Although a marriage conducted in Japan is valid in Japan, please inquire at your native embassy (general consulate) to make sure the marriage is valid in your home country as well.

If you are a foreign national or plan on getting married to a Japanese national (Japanese-style), please prepare the following items and come to the City Hall counter.

Things to be brought by both parties (Japanese, foreign national)

• Marriage registration (A document with bearing the signatures of the two adults witnessing their marriage. In case of a minor the consent of the parents is required.)
• Seal of the person submitting the notification (Shachihata-stamps won't be accepted)
• Identity verifying papers such as Residence Card, Special Permanent Resident Certificate, driver's license or passport

Documents to bring by the foreign national

• Birth Certificate  (translation attached)
• Certificate proving the persons nationality (translation attached)
• Certificate of your legal capacity to get married with a translation attached (This document can be obtained at the embassy or (general) consulate of the foreign national's home country). Because procedures may differ depending on the country please enquire at the respective embassy. There may be countries who do not issue this document. In that case, please refer to the Resident Affairs Division at the City Hall.

Documents to bring by the Japanese national

• Official copy of the family register (Only needed if your permanent residence is not Kobayashi City)

Remarks

Depending on the foreign national's home country the documents necessary to complete the marriage registration vary. Also, the processing of the registration may take a while. Please come to the Resident Affairs Division in time to discuss your marriage registration.
