Kobayashi, being set in the heart of southern Kyushu, is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and breathtaking mountains around. Kirishima mountain range offers everything from clean natural water and spectacular views, to enjoyable hiking and hot springs for all ages.
Kobayashi is also particularly famous for its Cosmos and Poppy flowers throughout the seasons of the year. During the end of March the city is transformed by the Japanese national flower the cherry blossom (the sakura tree). In almost every street the cherry blossom can be viewed. Around this time, spring has started and the weather is suitable for pleasant walks around the city.
The clear nights open up fantastic viewing of the stars which can be seen in even more detail at the city's observatory, Cosmos Dome. Why not watch the stars and then finish off the day with a trip to one of the nearby natural hot springs?
Other areas of natural beauty are particularly prominent in the eastern part of Kobayashi with the Iwase River providing some splendid geological sites such as the Sannomiya gorge. Sannomiya gorge is surrounded by legends and stories abound about the giant boulders in the gorge and the many famous people who have visited them. There is a "Roaring Tower" which preserves one of Japan's 100 scenic sounds and tourists can walk along the riverbank through a 1km series of 11 rock tunnels.
Kirishima National Park is only a 30 minute drive away where Ikoma Plateau and Ebino Plateau are situated.
Sukimuland has a bascule bridge 155 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 30.5 meters tall. The bridge offers a superb view of The Suki Falls.
